A full soda can impacting a tree or other imobile object is impressive at full speed. In slow motion it could be truly spectacular. Most of the contents of the can will drift away as a fine mist in the breeze.

Hmm, yeah could be good, but a coke can wont fit in the barrel... Also I am wary about shooting heavy objects, as I think the recoil could damage the valve and the guns structure....

You have just reminded me that i need to go and pick up that aluminium angle that I used to keep the barrel striaght. I lent it to someone months ago....

Oo I just thought, shooting a tennis ball at a sharp edge would be nice. Could get a bit of steel and sharpen the edge up, try and hit it square and see if it cuts the ball in half....

If it can be done with lead bullets I'm sure a tennis ball shouldn't be a problem

If you want to spring for shipping I have a blade from a paper shear. It's about 2 feet long, 1/2 inch or thicker steel and sharpened to a razor edge. It's used to make the edges of books even.

I'll have to dig for it. Haven't had in in daylight for years.

I just had a look at the cannon, which has been in my garden for about a year. I covered it all up to keep it dry, and luckily, its fine.

It all works, the valve was a bit sticky but I pulled it out, cleaned it and re greased it, shoved it back in and its all working perfectly.

It all seals fine, and its ready for the 40,000 fps wondercamera.

(I dry fired the cannon with the bag on the end. hehehe)

Hmm, you said you were going to do all this months ago on UKSGC (maybe even last year?) and I can't remember seeing any results, anyway my request stands:
a large mirror or sheet of glass, maybe reinforced - you might be able to see it ripple before it explodes. Ok it's going to make a mess but this isn't the kind of opportunity you get every day

Yeah we were going to do this months ago, but unfortunately the guy who had the camera lost the insurance he needed to take the camera out on personal, non paying jobs.

Also the camera we were using before (Phantom HD) is not fast enough to catch the ball, and these more capable cameras have only just been released.

This new lead is much more promising, and it will happen this time.

Mirror is an interesting idea. I was thinking I might put a mirror at 45 degrees and frame the camera so it looks like it is staring right down the barrel, that way we will get a shot showing the tennis ball coming straight towards the camera. Of course, the ball would just smash the mirror and the camera would not be harmed, but it would look like the ball was being shot right at the camera.

Definitely try some things with water. Perhaps a garbage bag full being shot with a tennis ball.

The results were quite nice in the scaled-down version I did today with my two-day-old EX-FC100:

Should be awesome with around one hundred times more frames than what I can achieve.

Do you know what resolution will the camera be recording at when you do the shots?

Hi,

Yeah I was thinking about water. I was thinking it would be interesting to shoot an old fish tank. I suspect that most of the glass panels would shatter from the pressure rise as the ball breaks the first panel and enters the water.

As far as frame size goes, we will have to tinker on the day. Depending on what frame rate we can get away with, we can vary the frame size. We plan on starting at 40,000 fps. We definatly do not need to go any faster than that, so if we feel that we can reduce the frame rate to increase the size, we will do.

It will be 512x512px or a bit smaller, in colour. We can double the frame size by doing monochrome, but thats boring.

Big enough for a good quality youtube vid!
