Just wondered if anyone has done this before. I know a CRT has a vacuum so it will implode then spray glass.

I will be hitting a 19 inch crt tv with a "c" cell battery.

I plan to cover the ground with a tarp to help pick up any glass but any ideas are welcome.
What's a good distance so I'm not hit by glass? 50 feet?

As Jack's video proves, it's nothing like as dangerous as you seem to think. Shooting a hole in something that's under vacuum doesn't mean it implodes.

Anyway, CRTs are tough glass. I've seen them thrown out of 2nd storey windows without smashing.
So, it's unlikely that glass will fly - still, I'd not be standing too close to the CRT, because it might throw glass, although probably not fast enough to be that dangerous.

Still, wear goggles - I wouldn't wager my eyesight on words like "probably" and "unlikely".
Does that thing kinda look like a big cat to you?

Thanks for the tips, vids and links guys. I wanted to be sure we wouldn't be making a trip to the ER today. I'll put up a damage vid/pic later today.

People underestimate the strength of these. The glass in the front is very thick (One I broke had almost a inch of glass).

keep in mind companies need the be extra careful for liability.

Yes they are indeed very strong. Several years ago I attempted to break one by hitting it as hard as I could with a baseball bat...several times. It just sat there and laughed at me....
