I'm attempting to design a nerf gun.. fed from a magazine. However, nerf darts are foam, so they are extremely "malleable" i guess would be a good word?
Would straight loading nerf darts into a magazine work, or would they have to be put into cartridges to be most effective?
Best way to make a nerf dart magazine?

i think this is the best way, essentialy its putting nerf ammo(don't know what there called) in pvc pvc tube that acts like a cartridge.

Nerf's N-Strike series has magazines that the darts are just straight loaded in to and they seem to work fine (for the most part).
The cartridges, while adding much more durability to the darts, do present problems. First off, it will make the magazine (and blaster) bulkier, you've got to work in an ejection system (which may or may not be complicated), then you have to worry about making the cartridges, then you have to worry about saving the cartridges (after a shoot). In other words, I don't think the cartridge mags are worth it.

I'd post a link to a wye mag, but Nerfhaven has been hacked and the search function on the archive doesn't work.
If you use a little patience, a lot can be learned from the Nerfhaven archives
Wye magazine is what you're looking for, it's ugly but very effective.

Is that question even worth askingJDP12 wrote:would they have to be put into cartridges to be most effective?
Are you planning a semiautomatic or bolt action/straight pull?

The Rapid Fire Rifle has a magazine setup using cartridges, perhaps something could be learned from it.

hmm interesting. JSR, I realize how much you enjoy cartridges, but then I'd have to design an extractor and such.. bleh.
It will be full auto, with semi capabilities theoretically. It's going to be based on jhalek's auto bolt design. A fairly simple, easy to construct design.
Thanks for the links so far..
Wye magazines are interesting, but extremely bulky as they are linear in design. also, wouldn't work very well with a auto bolt system I think

Here's something else regarding magazines http://btrettel.nerfers.com/nharchive/t7956.html.
Could you replicate the feeding mech on the recon/raider/longshot/longstrike/etc? There's a lot of info for brass-breeching a longshot here. That could be connected to jhalek's auto bolt design.
Or just say feck it and hot glue a recon feeding mech and mag to the auto bolt.

I hate to necro but I have actual material and it's only eighth on the page...
Look into btrettel's FANG 1. Basically a brass breech, polycarbonate magazine just like the actual Nerf blasters, with a polycarb dart pusher attached to a constant force spring.
