You could just use the R22 for the first stage, then swap your original first stage compressor to the second stage. Not a perfect scenario but it'll work if you just want the thing running again.

Yes, this compressor is an ideal primary stage unit for sure. It is much higher volume.

Hey Guys,

I have some more info for you..........

First, I found that the old style start relays allow the compressor to stall and restart without waiting 60 seconds like the solid state relays do.

Next (and this is something cool I just learned), compressors have an LRA rating. I learned that stands for "Locked Rotor Amps". Most refrigerator compressors are rated at 10 to 16 LRA. Some are above 18. Well, I found a R22 dehumidifier compressor (piston style, not a rotory style) that is rated at 38.6! This is a unit that was given to me last week by a customer of mine. So, I installed it as my secondary and I could not be happier! For one thing, the lower rated compressors would stall out with anything over 40 psi inlet pressure. If I wanted to go above 400 psi output, I had to restrict the inlet pressure to 25 psi. However, with this high LRA rated R22 unit, I can run 80 psi inlet pressure or more without stalling and my fill time is crazy fast now!

I could not be happier. :D

So, if you are looking at multiple compressors, research the LRA rating and get one with a high number, preferably over 20.
