how does this work

Cannons powered by pneumatic pressure (compressed gas) using a valve or other release.

Can someone explain to me how this works?

I tried to contact the author but no luck.

What is the reason for using a tyre inflater instead of just a air blower.

No reason, a blowgun would work just as well.
