A little slow motion study of a classic CO2 shotgun:



When the button under the stock is pressed, the whole barrel moves forward under spring pressure, pulling the cartridge with it as it is held in the breech by friction.

The rim of the cartridge then caught on the ejector which strips the cartridge from the breech and ejects it.
