28 inches should suffice, make sure you have a decent chamber volume and you'll be sailing. The great thing about lead pellets is that you can vary their diameter with a little work to suit your barrel - either place them on a BB skirt first and tap them with a mallet to increase diameter or hammer them through a section of barrel tubing a decrease diameter.
