Piston Air Gun.

hi all,

this is my idea for a piston air gun. If i make it i will make it in about a week because of current projects.

here it is comment.The piston is made of wood and the housing for the piton and cylinder is wood.
THe piston just needs to be pulled back gently to fire.

<strike>That wont work. To fill from the chamber you need a spring on your piston. Wood won't hold decent pressures and you'll never get it air tight. Also you havn't shown the barrel seat for the piston to seal against. It needs to be smaller then the pistons diameter. Why make it from wood? Spend a few bucks and buy a pressure rated tee.</strike>

Ah now I see what you mean, still don't use wood, it doesn't have tighter enough tolerance and your piston will fly out the back when triggered.

Air goes through wood, I learnt that in science, just as air can pass through a brick also.

He would probably put a little stopper such as a washer etc to prevent that, but just didnt draw it.

Unless made with tight tolerances from metal its performance wont be great. Opening time will be crap, you probably won't get the piston fully open before all the air is gone. Piston will also require O-Rings that are 100% sealed to stop air leaking out.

Its not going to be worth it, just build a normal piston.

A question, would varnishing/painting the wood make it airtight??

I agree how hard it would be to keep airtight around the piston though.

aah. yes the second i posted it i realised this problem i am going to add a washer or i might do something a bit different.

BTW, can't machine metal what other materials can i make the piston and the piston housing out of.

Couldn't you just house the piston in a pvc "T" connector?

well yes and now that i think about it thats probably the best.In fact if i build somehting like this i wll probably use a t piece of PVC.But i just, as spudyeti said, wanted to post an original design.

Dont we all!? You could still put the tee "upside-down" and call it original i guess LOL!
