I wouldn't bother with glass. If you can get a reasonable angle on the blade, it will chip. Quickly.

Volcanic glass has been used for centuries.

That's because volcanic rock is more a rock, such as obsidian. The mechanical properties will be very different from a clear pane of common glass, which seems to be what he wants to use.

Polycarbonate is much better than Plexiglas if you wish to go with plastic.

i think about a design

Made a knife today..1 piece of carbon steel, hardened and tempered. Fairly small, but holds nicely and is very sharp..Not sure what to do for a finish yet. Thinking of just running a buffing mop over it or blueing it..or just leaving it as it is, has a nice finish already..

Made a new knife today. Polished stainless steel, the blade pattern is by Daithi OCeileachair. Hardened by austenitizing then tempering. Pink cord wrapped handle for breast cancer awareness .

Got another one, its a nice little(well 8 inch) jeep lockback folding knife, its pretty nice, opens very smoothly, does alot of damage, and is very durable, and looks great. ill get a pic up soon

just finished this knife. the blade is 0.8C hand forged carbon steel (made by me) and the handle is made from teak, brass and birchbarn. what do you think?

EDIT: aand if somebodys interested, its tempered to about 59hrc and only the cutting edge is hard, the back and the spine is soft so that it doenst snap during work

This is the knife I mentioned earlier in this thread. Since I know nobody wants to go back and look for the specs, here they are

12 1/2" overall length, blade 8"
Hardend 440C stainless(plate quenched, cryo-treated and double tempered at 350F, so it should be in the 58-60hrc range.
Brass finger guard, kinda dull atm. Soldered on with tix solder.
Partial tang that goes nearly to the bottom of the handle, cemented in with JBweld.

It was slightly dull after heavy use for a month(trees), but 10 minutes with a whetstone brought it back to razor-sharp.

Sanding belts $20
Dry-ice for cryo $20
Solder and JB $20
everything else was free
Would have cost a lot more than $100 to buy custom!
