Hmm, that design relies on both springs to operate, doesn't it? It wouldn't work without some flexibility between the barrel plug and the piston. And the simultaneous adjustment of those spring strengths would determine firing pressure.
I say, Jack, I think it's topologically identical to one of your
proposed designs, isn't it?

Still sitting on my workbench, I may or may not finish it while I play with other ideas in the meantime.
Here's what I have so far, finished piston and main body with port cut out and piston seat installed:

Just as it was in the above photo, I've abandoned this line of thought and decided that preloaded cartridges are a better idea.
