For the barrel, you could use 2 aluminum bars with 1 side each having a machined grove, then bolt them together. As for spin, a tiny notch filed in the edge will make it spin as soon as it catchs free air. Dimes would be deadly ammo! Small, light weight, hard metal.

It's a good idea mitchza, Making it semi auto would be awesome.
I think I may start just doodling this idea on post-it notes.

Seriously guys - fork out $20 for a pneumatic nailgun off e-bay and you have a powerful semi-automatic launcher ready made that just needs a rail built to hold the coins.

That is exactly how i would make the barrel. Except replace the machined groove with a machined teflon insert that fits inside you pre-machined barrel.
You would have to use dowels to locate each half though- i agree with JSR though- the pressure required would be hardly worth the effort (for me at least). You WOULD have to make it auto too- flying discs are notorious bad flyers!

Yeah, my bad on the rail gun statement, I was just so excited to be typing I was losing control.... not really.

I meant a coil gun working on magnetism.

A rail gun would work in this instance, but, as was mentioned, I don't think any of us have a money tree in our back yard, except possbily Jackssmirkingrevenge, and its a euro-tree

The nail gun would work well, the spinning "tire" gun would work as well.
I can't see how either would work against the spinning effect the coin would have, though, for any real accuracy. However, both designs would work well with other shapped ammo, too, as long as the mass of the ammo was small enough. For instance wood dowel slugs would be light weight enough, could be made in standard sizes, stack loaded into a magazine of some sort, and fed into an automatic nailer, or a spinning tire, and fired through a round (=cheap and easily had) barrel.

Actually, I'll practice what I preach - I have an unused nailgun at home, an ashtray full of coins and a massive 110 psi compressor at work - I think I know what I'll be doing over the weekend

As promised, I've done some work on the subject - excuse the ghetto lego setup, I just wanted to evaluate the power potential. I wasn't disappointed, at a few inches range it drove a coin through about 1cm worth of corrugated cardboard Friday night's a little busy but I'll do some proper work over the weekend, watch this space.

I wouldn't call Legos "ghetto", they are a "prefabricated cunstruction system". Imagine what you could do if you could get metal Legos!

Heck, even with stock legos you can make things stronger than wood. With a little effort you can make'm as strong as steel, though the construction would be bigger with the stock Legos than it would be with steel.

Looks like there'll be a lot of lego in the final design, great stuff and the only childhood toy I kept because it's so bloody useful.

Even used drilled out lego blocks as silencer baffle separators once worked a treat

railguns dont cost that much to build if you can find enough junk capacitors to provide the power.
