I would usually wind up just drilling a small hole and using either a short #8 or #6 machine screw and nut to fasten them together. That's just my opinion.
And HaiThar, I think the only thing you wouldn't be able to bolt together would be glass, or some such, (fragile or extremely soft). Anything you can drill a hole in, basically.
