Yeah you can't use a soldering iron to piece copper or brass together. You would need a torch (either propane or mapp gas) , some flux, and some solder but there is different kinds of solder.
Anyway tell your folks that they can pick up a cheap deal for 100 bucks down at any harbor freight and tell your dad that you'll learn how to use it and you'll fix anything he needs fixed. I do agree with Mr. Steve about the bong. There could be a lot more degenerate things you could be doing than welding a spud gun or whatever.

thanks biggrib for correcting me i would want the poor guy using a soldering iron then loosing his hands because of my advice.

found a cheap MIG on harberfrieght.com ill use its price and the beer bong idea.

Hope this isn't a late post or anything, but tell them that there are a bunch of college scholarships for people who weld. I'm actually serious on this one. It almost worked for me

Well... after learning how to weld at my grandpas place, my mom actually considered getting a MIG. So we go to the shop and then she saw the price of one and all my hopes and dreams flew out (or through) the window like a spud at supersonic speed...
