Well seeing as I couldn't have anything touch the side of the end cap as it has to be glued onto a piece of pipe, I just got a metal coupler and threaded that on until it was right up against the back of the end cap.
This does two things:
1) Stops the piston from hitting the nipple while transfering most of the energy through the coupler and into the end cap
2) Acts as a lock nut preventing the nipple coming out.
It also takes up a fair bit of pilot volume which is always good if you're JSR
