well i can see this is going nowhere and we will never agree
and now for some slightly more on topic discussion, would you be able to reinforce epoxy pycrete style and would it make a big difference to strength?

Cos his didn't work?
Although actually it's to try something different.

I have done this in the past by mixing wood shavings or similar filler in with the epoxy, it tends to reduce strength but if you're using it as a filler as in SPG's case you can save on a bit of epoxy.

Well, in the light of recent ideas and developments, perhaps it would have worked if it looked something like this?

reduces strength? thats wierd

i wonder why?

It depends what tyou're using as a filler, if you use steel mesh for example then the result is stronger

i was planning on using something fiberous although steel mesh is a good idea...

It needs to be a material that is fibrous and tougher than the matrix you're putting it in.
Small flakes don't work. Pykrete is a special case.
If you mixed epoxy with steel wool you'd have a godawfully tough substance.

thats one of the things i was thning abot using, do you think epoxy combined with something like steel wool or mesh would make a strong enough piston for use i a qev at 400psi or will there be a risk of chipping or cracking?

assuming it has a rubber bumper it should hold up, how thick would it be though?

ALIHISGREAT so you are actually building this....? plizz post your results as soon as it's ready...
wouldn't a solid disc made from rubber work better? you could add something to make it more stiff, like glueing it with a smaller steel disc... but it would be better if JSR commented on this...

well i'm not making "this" i'm thinking about modding a qev for higher pressures and i kind of highjacked the topic

and for that a solid rubber disc would work very well (thats why they already have them in

) but it would be hard making a perfect disc

so i am exploring other ideas like an epoxy piston which would need reinforcement or a plastic piston (teflon maybe) cut from a rod (which would solve the 'perfect disc' problem) but there are many things i need to think about first like the thickness of the piston already in the qev and if its worth increasing the thickness for use with higher pressures etc. maybe i will open up my qev tomorow and have a look

but as i do not want to invade SPG's thread any longer if you wish to discuss this more can you please post in my '400psi ultra valve' thread
