I've always thought DragonForce reminded me of Children of Bodom but with a bad singer. Just my opinion though.

Herman Li can't play guitar worth crap. He can pretty much sweep pick and that's it.

I find modern music lacks passion almost completely unless you are in the situation the music describes. So if everybody you loved left you and you hate your life...you might be into certain bands where if you're like me and you love to let the good times roll, music of the 60's and 70's might be your thing. This is why I think I dislike so much modern music, a lot of it has a negative feeling to it. Rap is about sex and drugs or being incredibly self centered, modern "metal" is always growling and talking about being "EFFING MAD GRAAAAAAHHHH!" and other genres have similar things. I listen to Wolfmother and feel good but if I listen to System of A Down (no matter how true the lyrics may be) I get kind of angry. The Beatles make me laugh at everything while Led Zeppelin makes me feel slick.

Anybody kind of see what I mean here?

Yeah though there are a few new-ish metal bands I like.

I try to set my limits for metal at, nothing lighter then Iron Maiden, and nothing so heavy you don't know what they're singing, no one knows what they're singing.

And Mudvayne is right at the edge, so that's as far as I go, though I don't like their new music as much.

Iron Maiden makes me so jealous, I wish I had that kind of endurance on guitar. Any galloping riff I attemtp makes my arm sore after a few minutes. Of course, I know that will build with time.

JK, I don't have the game. I just couldn't help myself.

On the topic of music, I personally am not too much into any heavy rock but I am warming up to it. I don't play guitar, but instead the trumpet. My younger sister wants to learn guitar, so if she does pick up lessons, I'll just learn it from her.

Actually, I think that they both have bad singers. The Dragonforce singer just sounds weird, and the Children of Bodom singer just sounds like a demon.

I'll definetly say that you have to grow to like Zeppelin and Sabbath's real songs....meaning the stuff rarely played on the radio or even spoke of. This is true for the majorady of older music. I found that the albums were better and eventually I started like the less known songs better.

Stairway to Heaven is not Zeppelins best...Kashmir or Achilles Last Stand.

Iron Man is hardly Sabbaths best...Symptom of The Universe or Into The Void.

I could go on for hours but I won't.

EDIT:Looking back...I could go on for about 2 more minutes.

I myself am I also a fan of classic rock/metal, I dont listen to anything produced after 1994. Nirvana is about the most recent thing I can take, although I disagree with you spuzi 14, although Herman Li isn't the best, he is definatly on his throne with the guitar gods (aka. Slash, Randy Rhoads, Angus Young, Jimmy Page, Geddy lee, Victor Wooten, Michael Angelo Batio, Eddie Van Halen, Tony Iommi) btw supernaut was the best balck sabbath song

I wouldn't put him in the same catagory as some of those metal gods.
Michael Weikath is a far better guitarist.

Michael Weikath isn't at the same level of people like Randy Rhoads, Slash, Zakk Wylde, Angus Young, Jimmy Page, etc
And neither is Herman Li. The people you listed have really changed the heavy metal scene, and some even music in general.

Herman Li is just from a band that's not all that original, more or less Helloween on crack.

Sure he can play fast and what not, so can Buckethead, but you really need someone who's done something for the industry, who influences people and what not.

Your pretty much right I agree, most of those guys changed metal and rock, .... I guess what I was trying to say is that herman can play pretty d*mn fast

For me....

Playing fast is worthless unless you can inject some type of passion in it. This is why I get into blues music so much. To me, Herman Li sounds annoying. This is true for Buckethead, it lacks passion because of his finger knubbing I think it's called. Eddie Van Halen in my opinion set the max speed you can play with passion still when he unleashed tapping. Any faster and it's kind of annoying. Vibrato and bending slow will beat lightning speed everytime for me.

You guys might see it different and that's fine. I mean some of our members might feel good when they listen to that rap "music" but I won't talk about that for fear of getting banned.

And just for the record, it's nice to be able to have a civil discussion about music. Normally anywhere I go it's "you don't like Slipknot? dude eff you! you dont know nothing bout music!! shutup you [ahem] you cant even play guitar! go yada yada your yada yada"

Right, my 1984 Fender Stratocaster. This was the last year they made them entirely by hand in the US. I swapped the pickups for '79 vintage pickups, changed the strings for heavier strings, and lowered the action a bit. I love this guitar.

Left, my favorite acoustic - an Olympia Guitars model Tacoma acoustic/electric setup for classic rock / blues (steel strings, low action, "earthy" mid-range sound).



"Rosebud", a guitar I built completely from scratch a few years back with some help from Dad (mostly in finishing the wood). Shaped the body out of a block of Alder, the neck is birdseye maple with a Rosewood fretboard. A few hundred hours went into this, mostly sanding.
Pickups are Duncan 59 humbuckers. Electronics setup is custom allowing for 39 possible pickup combinations.



Amp is a Fender Deluxe halfstack 2x10 250w. Also have a Peavy TransTube I use a bit. Effects are simple: CryBaby Wah, Zoom 505, Boss distortion and tuner pedals.

My music tastes are a little dated: Zeppelin, Floyd, Santana, the Who, Steely Dan, Clapton, RHCP, etc....
