Ive wondered what it looks like when something seperates from the sabot/wadding.

How it effects it's flight path.

A well designed sabot tears away without affecting the flight path at all, or affecting it in a consistent and repeatable manner.

Regarding the subject of this thread, it looks to me that in spite of the fins, the centre of gravity is too far towards the rear to allow for stable flight.

Maybe if you drilled out the backside of the core it would be more stable.

The desing work has been done for you, and penetrator would be easy to make. Making a sabot with multiple petals is a little more challenging however, it would be much easier to fabricate a "cup" type sabot like these:

hmm the ones on the right look interesting, i was thinking of using something similar to a dart (as in a darts dart) as a projectile or i would atleast use some flights off a dart so i could probably make a cup work although the dart would be heavyer at the front so it might fall out of a cup if i make it too short so a 'petal' sabot would be better for that.

Another solution that allows you to have a simple disc sabot is to have the penetrator supported in the barrel by making the fins as wide as the calibre:



If you don't like the fins being so wide, you can use two sets of thin fins, a set at the rear and one at the mid-section.

thats a good design, i will find some suittable flights to fit my 20mm barrel and i will find a relitivly heavy dart or nail

Good one, yes. But make sure that the foam disc is think enough that it woun't have room to flip in the barrel.

Technically, it would be supported by the dart's fins, so making the sabot length around 50-75% of the barrel calibre should suffice.

True. I meant about that thickness anyway. I didn't mean make it 2 inches long or anything.

Make sure the fins are secure and durable enough, I've had plastic fins ripped off heavy nail darts on firing.

Obviously if they're being welded on thats not an issue but more lightweight projectiles might have that problem.
