possibly I could add a ballvalve between to sections of chamber that could be closed to cut the volume volume when needed
interesting idea but i would never deliberatly spend money on something to reduce the power of my cannons, the only way i would do it would be to lower the pressure for quiet shots.

Ah, but small chamber-high pressure gives better power than big chamber-low pressure...

You may have a problem with the things then. What's the low frequency attenuation on them?
As I said before, HEAL uses a much larger volume of air than that and dumps it much faster - even though my defenders aren't great, it's not that loud with them. I'm considering buying a better set with higher protection, just to be on the safe side - because, as I have said elsewhere, the males in my family have a nasty tendency to lose their hearing in middle age (both my father, his brother and their father have/had hearing aids), and so I want to take as many steps to protect my hearing for as long as I can - I avoid what some people do with ear phones so loud you can hear them from across the room*, and all kinds of things.
*Reminds me of a great quote from Griff Rhys Jones at Live Aid (at the Wembley stadium):
"I'm sorry to interrupt, but we have had a bit of a complaint about the noise ...... from a woman in Belgium."

Ragnarok... my ear defenders are ghetto earplugs.... I made them myslef so I don't expect them to work as good as off the shelf ear defenders...
Today I joined two 2L bottles inline and suprisingly this design works quite well... so well that I can shoot my gun in my basement at 320 psi without any problems....
suprisingly it works better when the bottles are not perfectly tight joined - so when air can escape/leak when firing (tested at 320 psi )
the whole thing was very easy to build and it is as much ghetto as it can be
I am still going to test the same thing with baffels or try filling the silencer with some wadding....
pics soon

Forget about my previous silencer - I built something better
I tried something new and I must say it is really something yhmmmmm.... new....?. I included a schematic in the pic....
I threaded the muzzle of my barrel and put there 1/2" T..... then I wraped a 1/2" nipple in some kind of cloth and joined it with the T.... then I did the same on the other end of the nipple and screwed another T on top of the nipple
my new silencer works almost as good as my previous silencer build from 2X2L bottles but it is much more compact and it also serves as a crude sight...
I must say that it is rather original since it doesn't have any baffles or even expansion chamber.... it works more less in the same way like a normal pneumatic muffler..... sometime ago I had an idea that this might work but I've never acctually tried this till today....
I suppose it could be improved by adding an expansion chamber - but generally it proves that silencers built on this princliple do work
PS. sorry for not adding pics of my previous silencer but I have so much to do these days that I spend the little time I have on testng new designs and improving my gun

That reminds me of a surpressor setup for a tank that JSR posted a link to a while back. Any help JSR?

You mean
this one?
Well if I understood correctly it's basically a muzzle brake with a packed cloth "baffle", surprised to hear it works so well to be honest.

The point would be to reduce the level of discomfort of your neighbours when you're testing state of the art artillery systems in the vicinity of civillian habitation

It doesn't silence the gun completely but it makes the "BANG" at 300 psi more quiet... it is more like a normal silencer at lower pressures.....
well i think that talking about level of sound and using words like "more quiet" doesn't give you any idea about this - I have to find some way to objectively compare sound levels.....
right now I am trying to determine whether it is possible to improve this... i have some idea... i think that i can improve this if i add an expansion chamber (ok it is obviuos) and increase the surface that slows down and 'leaks' the air out of the silencer
