Back on topic here...I was thinking about just adding some pillow blocks under the existing axle and just put the old sprocket on the new axle.Then I would cut the old parts that are sticking out and connect the chain. What do you guys think?

Here is a good place to check out go cart parts. They sell blank sprockets for home builds.
