That is a real good idea... I'm going to have to try it... How short would be too short if you snipped the string.
What kind of damage can you do with them?

Not necessarily, as enough exposure to flashing images can either give someone permanent epilepsy or induce a one-off seizure.
Which is not nice at all - I knew someone who died from one.

why put a tail on them at all?
One of my barrels has a few rare earth magnets duct-taped around the it where the proposed shot lays ,to facilitate it staying in place as well as together. We've experimented with all kinds of metallic shot fired as dumps down a barrel... the yellow tape would certainly aid cleanup if you doh'nt (yeah,I said that) have a roller magnet.

Because the darts need areodynamic stability and the tail provides it by putting the center of gravity forward and moving the
center of pressure back.

i stared at that thing for ten minutes and was perfectly fine, i don't see how that causes seizures
