If the hole through which the BBs have to pass to get to the ball valve is the same diameter as the barrel, then there will be a BB in place to block the flow until it is allowed to move when the ball valve is fully open, so air losses will be minimal.

Besides, even after the valve is opened you'll be dumping air for at least a couple seconds. The 1/10th second (or whatever) that it takes to open the valve isn't going to be a significant factor in the air useage.

Ok, you win...
Now you just need to make it work with a nice trigger, rather than a ball valve, so that it is usable in real airsoft situations.
