Hey I think I know what I'm doing for my video. True Value has obnoxiously large nails, close to the size of railroad ties, if not bigger. My friend says he has a 55 gal drum he says he doesn't need...


Sound good eh? If successful I will progress toward harder targets. Hopefully I can reach a steel plate.

Edit... I finally watched the "general" video.
If you're going to make a video 2+ minutes long, you can at least include more than just one impressive shot and not tack on a ton of unnecessary credits.

Hmm... Well the first video was really made for youtube not this site. The second one was placed just for the reason _Fnord mantioned. I wanted to put the cannon into a realistic perspective. BTW That's me in the video ducking and covering. I know the true power of the gun. I told my friends to do the same but they wanted to risk it. I've never actually seen my own cannon fire other than through the video. And another random, off topic, tangental fact is I've never shot any of my potato guns with a potato!

That's correct. I will try to attach fins to the nail...somehow. As for the 55 gallon drum. I've planned for a distance shot but the unfrozen potato description makes me want to go for a 1/4 in steel plate. A hardened 1/4 in steel plate is enough to apparently stop a .223 round. It's energy is close to 3x the most optimistic kinetic energy my gun could produce. So I'm torn between the 55 gal drum with having a 1/16 in steel wall and a non-hardened 1/4 in. steel plate.

Incendiary projectile: Any projectile that is capable of producing flame.
Rocket propelled projectiles, pyrotechnic smoke bombs, or any other burning projectiles would qualify as an incendiary projectile.

BTW do tracers count? I would hardly qualify them as "burning". I want to use them purely for what they're designed for: tracking the round as they go down range to make aim adjustments. It's hard to catch ammo go down range when your not in the potential blast radius of the gun. Camera reviewing doesn't work very well either. It becomes very hard to see the round.

you can make it with a light bulb.. i think a burning tracer is a no no on this page... email pcguy!

This is true - but penetration is not completely about kinetic energy.

I may be being a little optimistic, but I believe I could use HEAL at 30 bar to penetrate 6mm steel at a quarter mile range with my current dart design (and the sabot that will go with it).

The 6mm plate I have around is large enough that if the darts fly reasonably consistently, hitting - even at those distances - wouldn't be too much of a stretch if I take my scope and bipod into account.

I just need to finalise the dart design, then make a dozen or so of them, find a long-ish range to fire along, then go test the theory.
