No, look at diagram 1 at http://www.spudfiles.com/forums/piston ... 57 .html . In that, wouldn't the air in the chamber push back the piston?

no there is air behind the piston holding it back then you takes the air behind it away and the air from the chamber pushes it back and there is a open path to the barrel :)
