Another good location for dumpster diving is home subdivision construction sites. You'll find lots of pipe, teflon tape, gloves, hearing protection, wiring, and all sorts of other goodies!
Also, ALWAYS take advantage of uncontained trash days. It's a treasure-trove of great stuff!
EDIT: even more!
even has the same topic name!!!

My favorite was dumpster diving for porn behind Hastings way back in the day. Definitely DDing out at construction sites can yeild some very interesting things. I like finding ducting which makes very good cosmetic coverings for different things, i made a dash board for my buddies old nova out of ducting riveted together. Also finding 4"+ diameter pvc is always good.

I've ruined a $50 pair of jeans while dumpster diving. BBQ sauce stains it to this day. But it was entirely worth it. My school had gotten rid of a lot of old 1970's era electronic equipment. If your an electronics enthusiast you'll know that electronic during those days were much more reliable and had higher tolerances. A capacitor the size of a soda can is a small price to pay for that kind of performance. I found maybe $300 of electronic components inside that equipment. (in today's currency value)
