Use the edge of a metal file to clean up the threads,
Then put some teflon tape (the white stuff on the roll) if you're going to force thread it on like others suggested.
Teflon tape is actually more a lubricant to protect the threads.
A lot of people have a misconception that it just gives a seal by itself.
A teacher actually told me that and I've found it to be true. 8)
