A little more dangerous http://www.spudfiles.com/forums/viewtop ... tml#163769

you need to be very careful when using oxygen. It can't be used in conjuncture with any gauge or fitting that has been used in an oily situation (down stream from a pump with oil problems, or anything of the sort) or else it will explode. As cdheller said, things do all sorts of unexpected things when you hit them with pure O2, and you must be careful.
Make sure you get a new regulator, or one that has never been used for anything but oxygen, as 3000psi can easily destroy your standard fitting in an instant.

As for the time it would take to fill the CO2 tank to 150psi, I would say a second or two at max, depending on the flow restriction of the regulator.

Yes i've read articles on violent oxygen explosions. Some of you have already stated the reason why it can happen. My suggestion would be to leave it alone or... only fill the tank up part way. I think your life is worth more than a bloodstained room and a shot at 6:00 news haha.

Just my input though, you do whatever floats your boat. :o

hmmm...well how fast do you think it could fill a 16oz co2 tank to around 150 psi?

unless you are talking about from a compressor, and then it depends on the compressor.

sorry i didnt realize you had posted which is why i restated my question...i do not plan to shoot at 3000 psi...i just plan on using the tank to fill up my chamber...and will you please explain to my what the regulator is? and how it would be used in this situation?

can you tell me what the tanks are ment for?
you are a braver man then i to mix oxygen with anything i hear to many storys. =[

can you take a picture of the pump or a diagram of how it works?

how did you get a hold on a high pressure Oxy pump and two oxy tanks with out knowing what a regulator is?
I highly suggest that you don't go along with this project, as it could be fairly dangerous, and from the sound of it, you don't have any experience with oxygen, or high pressure.

As to your question, a regulator is a special device that regulates the high pressure gas down to a lower pressure.

If you were to connect your oxy tank directly to the CO2 tank it would be nearly instantaneously filled to what ever pressure the oxy tank was at. Then it would blow up because you weren't using high pressure fittings or a high pressure valve on your cannon, and you might die from the metal shrapnel.

What were these tanks origionally used for, and what other equipment do you have to go along with it?

the tanks are my dads...he doesnt get enough oxygen to his brain and has a machine that he turns on and breathes through a hose...and the smaller tanks like the one i have pictured are for wehen hes out walking around...and on the machine he uses at home there is a port to refill the smaller tanks

if im not mistaken i do believe that the oxygen tanks have a regulator on them...because as you described without one all of the oxygen would rush out...and the particular tank pictured has a function where the oxygen flow will paulset with your breathing or a steady flow...couldnt i open the flow on the tank to make it come out just a tad quicker and watch the guage on my cannon and shut it off when it reaches the desired psi?

depends on the way that the regulator/restricter works. If it is a regulator, and takes the pressure down to 1psi or what ever, then no, it will not work. If it is a restricter, and just cuts down the flow, then if you are very very careful, you could do that, but just be ware that if your hand slips, and you open it too much, your face will explode.

i am fully aware of the dangers...but as you have noticed i am a little unexperienced in this area and just wanted some information...im going to check out the tank and see if its a regulator or a restrictor and see what i can do...but if it is a regulator such as the one you desribed there should be a way to let it put out more psi right? i guess ill just have to look at it

also i have read that oxygen will combust if mixed with sometihng flamable...i know that pvc primer and cement is very flamable...but since there is no ignition source inside of the cannon there wouldnt be anyway for the combustion to take place would there?

Here's a thread on the dangers of using oxygen.

Check out the pictures on page 2 posted by JSR of an air rifle that used oxygen. Doesn't look pretty does it?

EDIT: crap, clide beat me already to posting the link

Then i think you should leave them for your dad instead of making a launcher out of it.
Wouldn't you agree so?

i would agree so if i were permanently redering the tanks unusable...but seeing as how i will be using the tanks to fill my chamber my dad can use them at anytime he feels inclined to do so

(Dad) - son, have you seen my oxygen tank?
(son) - umm noo ( yeah I used it fill my advanced combustion)
(Dad) - eeeeekkhhh.... [funeral next week]

:?

Ask your dad before you take any of his tanks....

Start with something simple and safe... if you really want to use higher pressures than a normal compresor can give build a fridge compressor or get a CO2 tank
