stainless is tough stuff
I have problems drilling it on the drill press
lawls, who needs a drill press when you got a turbo-super-ultra-mega-supercalafragalisticexpialidocious hybrid.
tell me if I spelled that right

Depends on the grade of the stainless and the grade of the normal steel. I'm sure a high grade stainless could be stronger than a low grade steel, but in general I believe normal steel is stronger than a typical stainless steel.

hmm i have to get normal steel then, mabe i can get a huge solid steel cylinder and see how far i can get into steel.

I believe that's roughly what I said... that the highest grades of steel are stronger than the highest grades of SS, but that most SS is generally of higher quality than the average steel plate you find lying around.
Good job Spudfarm, not many people have done this with a spudgun. Now see if you can do it with unhardened steel. I believe that is a better test - having enough spare energy that you can use a projectile softer than the target, and still go through. That, and hardening steel is an annoying job to go through for a single shot...

nah i shoot just about 5 shots in a day so i can harden it, and i think it is quite fun to see my work gives results.
but sure i will try with a normalized dart.
and is it any better if i try to harden the stainless and use a soft dart?
BTW, wasent it i that had the capacitor conversation with you?

so, i did like DYI said today. tried with soft steel darts. they took a good chunk out of the plate but they rater turned into bent pieces of steel.
however i decided to test my new bullet trap made out of books so i gave it all and made a dart with my hands. it was a really soft steel rod that i warmed up to it was glowing and shaped it with a hammer. then i hardened it like crazy before i grinded to get it razor sharp. i hardened it a little bit after that again to be sure.
i put it in and loaded the gun. when i was running to get the ignitor the disk slipped and let the air out on the 3x pre ignition pressure, the dart almost made it through!! i made a nice deep hole rather than a dent and the dart was just a little bit bent. i straigthend it up and am going to shoot it for real tomorrow since the sun went down.
the "Ghetto dart" pulverized itself in the barrel with my nice penetrator

Wow I can't believe I missed this. Thats pretty damn cool you were able to pierce that plate.
Nicely done, and nice work with making your own darts, you seem to have a good knack for it.
Sorry to hear about the demise of your ghetto dart by the way.

i have no problem to think that i would have got the "forged" dart through the plate at 150psi. it is so hard at the tip that it is almost scary.
i will have to get a cutting torch to harden my darts

That's just insane.
Me and my buddies have put holes in steel of similar thickness using thermite, but never a spud gun!
Bravo!
