WT... no springs at Home Depot?
I think I know why they told you that. Unless the zombie thing is starting.
Hope I don't get sued when you shoot your eye out, but if you still can't find any springs you may have to get creative and actually take apart something. whoah.
TP roll tube holders have a spring but it's probably too weak to be useful.
Pop open (automatic) umbrellas usually have a spring inside that would work.
If you can't find a used one they carry new ones in most drug stores.
Sort of expensive but...
(You could buy one when you go to pick up your meds there probably).
BTW if your next project has more parts I think you'll make General!

We ship our products throughout the world using air and ocean transportation services.

That's exactly what the site said when I tried to order from them a year ago. After waiting about 7 days, I got one of those "We regret to inform you that, due to increasing customs regulations and other such bullcrap, we no longer ship to new customers outside the USA."

Hardware section near the nuts and bolts, should have bags of small assorted springs.(Those might be too short though) So...
Ask for a spring for an outside wood fence door. It won't be the right one but they're usually located in the same place as the spring you're looking for.
If the employee hangs around just say "thanks I will find the one here"
I wouldn't recommend complaining because they'll remember you next time you need something.
Good Luck. BTW, that made a little more sense that they just opened.
About the umbrella spring, I was really suggesting you find a broken one or one that won't be missed that's all. It seemed funny you're having trouble finding a spring but IDK... 8)

I know that feeling. I dodged so many questions when the store workers by my house were cutting me some PVC, me and my friend were there and we were like "We can't use cellular core because...uhh...it'll...break, yea"
"We can't use these [DWV] parts, they're uhh...not...going...to work...yea"
We're only 14 and they give me the feeling that if they knew what we're doing they wouldn't sell us anything anymore.

is it possible to make your own?

My friend once made one but it's hard to make them strong. He was going to make it into an airsoft grenade but it never took off.
