It was suggested that the original idea (combustion + valve) wouldn't work any better than the gun without the valve, indeed it would perform much worse than the gun without the valve. To get an increase in performance you would use a brust disk instead of a valve.
A hybrid takes things one step further and pressurizes the fuel air mix before ignition. Different beastie with different design constraints. A burst disk gun at 1X can be made from pressure rated PVC. It is generally thought that hybrids should be made from sturdier materials (though there are exmples of PVC hybrids).
