Same here! I came from a pretty poor family too, but my siblings are like 12 years old than me, but they only spoil me when I do well, which I haven't been doing since well yeah.

When I wanted something my parent's would use "corporal punishment" on my a$$, but I didn't turn out into a delinquent. Although I didn't do much when I was young, I was slaved my regular TV programming, but my sister and brother would always give me shat and bully me. Although the only thing I actually did back in my childhood was play with lego with my younger cousin, we would always build like a mini city and stuff, it was fun .

My parent's won't even let me work, but they give me allowance to buy lunch, but I use it on the bb machine guns I make. I want to be an airsoft fanatic, but Australia is being a doodle head. Although building stuff is somewhat more fun than just buying if you ask me.

i agree. i love the thought that i will be apart of this awesome future but if u watch the science channels documentaries on developments in future tech it all lead to a very vegetable like existence. everything will be done from the couch on the internet or for us by our robotic servants.

it's a horrible thought to think of what will happen when 1 hacker destroys it all. mankind will die out. accept for the ones with the survival/diy mind set.

I always liked classes where teachers gave you a task and few items to work with and said "OK, you have what you need. Figure it out for yourself."

I'll never understand how they can de-bug software conflicts, but can't figure out the lawn mower.

Around here, they can't even do that. There were maybe 10 people in my school who knew their way around a computer, maybe 5 were really good. They had common sense, but weren't really skilled mechanically.

About 95% of the males in my school were jocks, emos, and MTV idiots.
About 95-98% of the females just sat there and looked pretty. They generally got good grades, but so much of your grade is tied to doing boring repetitive tasks, I don't even think it means anything anymore.

it's people like this that inspire me to do what i do. i feel for all of Australia.
that is why we need this forum. so we can find ways around unfair rules ant etc.

Haha, I do film television and new media as a subject. My teacher always tells us not to be brainwashed by the media, because the power of the media through the use codes and conventions is what ruins contemporary society's mind.

And I feel that our government is find us to becoming less and less trustworthy. Youth allowance in Australia back 10 years ago, once you get it, you get it that's it. Meaning that once you apply for it you get it no questions asked, but all you have to do is that if you start working you have to let the government know (they call the finance thing in Australia Centerlink) that you started working then bam, they'll cut it off, but that's fair.

But now I'm only 16, don't even had a job and I only got my youth allowance 3months ago and they've sent me a letter asking for my parent's current income from three years ago, which I filled out in my original application. Which I find plain stupid we've already stated what our income was, whats the point asking for it again?

I feel as the government is becoming more corrupt then it already has been.

i was trying to explain to a person why there car was vapor locking and they werent even intersted in something that would save there ass if they got stuck somewere open and desserted when it happens again

at the camp i work at i love getting the new staff members all excited to work at a scout camp because they got life at 13, and then handing them a gallon of "d" concentrate and a brush and a bucket while teling them theyll be cleaning the toitlets in the ahower house. the look on there face is priceless

I agree with the personality aspect and also the way people are raised.

As a kid I was always curious. I would end up taking all my old toys apart to see what the insides looked like and try to figure them out. I was also introduced to firearms and at a young age. I think that is why I have so much respect and responsibility when it comes to them. My dad taught me how to hunt and fish and many other things outdoors as well.

I believe that the way I was raised plays a big part in my addiction and satisfaction with building spud guns.

Agree with you all the way i-will. As for as the loss of common sense among the population; In my opinion its due to technology in part and the need for instant gratification. The way I see it is that people are different, and thats not going to change. I know certain people can get on our nerves by the way they act and talk but we shouldn't worry about it, life's too short. :thumbleft:

Yeah, jeez don't any of you guys watch MTV? That's what's life all about...

This is so true. Our generation rely too much on technology and dont know how to do things themselves.

I mean about that firearm thing, firearms are illegal to anyone below 18 in Australia (you cant get a license until 18+) so if the teacher asks"who has used a gun" i dont think anyone will raise their hands. Unless she means Spud GUns as well...
I kinda despise all those people who have no clue about anything and call in an electrician to fix a lightbulb or something. My neighbourhoos is okay, lots of loud noise (like 5 people renovating houses) so i can shoot whenever i like without people complaining

I abolutely agree with this topic. People today have become accustomed to either throwing something out, or paying someone else to fix it for them if it doesn't work; The USA is probably the worst with this. Most of the kids in my class think it's rediculous that i can make the things i do (my piston valved gun for example).

I can't wait to see their faces when they see that i made a talk-box - i took apart an mp3 speaker (wow!! really?!?!) and put the actual speakers on the inside of a section of 4" pvc, and the naked controls on the outside. (You made that ?!?!?!?!?!?)

A huge problem that I have is this...

We have good technology but its not really incorporated into our society.. its mainly incorporated into our entertainment. We have the technology to make a cheap matrix plate for power outlets so that instead of having power outless you would have a solid plate along the bottom of the walls in your house... This metal plate could replace the trim and provide power outlets anywhere in the room via magnetic catch.. It would cost a little more but nobody does it. (A project im thinking about doing.)

We have better materials that are cheaper, more environmentally friendly and last longer but are not used.. A good example is the sidewalk material.. Home automation still isnt done in the mainstream and alternative fuels and safe nuclear power still isnt incorporated in many countries..

With that said you reminded me of what happened yesterday when I was at maccas' with my friends. I was waiting for my foods to be made when these goth piercing weiner kids came to the counter. At first glance I wanted to give them the left hook to the back the noggin'. They just came up to the checkout chick... who quite pretty and just out of know where asked "could I have your number" which I totally stupid in the fact they don't even introduce themselves before even asking.

Anyway with that said, she was like I'll be back in 5 to give it to you, 30minutes later she never came back. I know violence isn't the answer but I don't really like those kind of emo goth people. I don't mind the way they dress, and yes personality for who are actually like have respect with other people.

That's 20 things, and I guess I could manage... probably 11 pretty well, three more with some competence, another four slightly shambolically, and I could at least guess at the last two.
I don't think that's bad going.

My own skill set is eclectic - mostly because I'm very privileged to have two very intelligent parents who have huge skill sets.

My mother draws, paints, teaches ICT and astronomy, touch types, has a degree in linguistics, cooks, speaks three extra languages (French, Spanish & Welsh) to a reasonable degree of competence, amongst so many other things that I forget.

My father used to work in computing. Unlike my mother he didn't tend to work with things like Office, so his skills there are a little limited - but if you want someone to work to fix a computer, no matter what is wrong with the software, he can fix it. He used to repair databases the world over for BP - at the time, he was amongst the world's best. (Which is part of what caused his depression. Going from there to redundancy and sorting socks in drawers can do that)
He also has impressive mechanical skills (although not the equal of mine!), can fix electronics & electrics, good with finances, and again, loads of stuff I forget.

So that's where I've learnt my wide skill sets - Art, mechanics, some computing, maths... all of it basically.
Except spudding and ballistics, those are self-taught.

There are more skills I would like though. I would personally love to be able to play the guitar, but I don't have the time or money to learn.

Being on this forum and at university tends to help - but equally, it means I often over estimate people's intelligence elsewhere.
