But all in all, it still sounds cool. Maybe Larda will see this thread and we'll have something next to perfect flying out of that beastly hybrid cannon of his within the month.

The best explanation I've head is that it's intended to compensate for the fact that most shotguns have choked barrels, ie the bore gets narrower towards the muzzle, and therefore since the contact surface is the splines or "rifling" as opposed to the full diameter of the slug, it stops jamming and excessive wear.

Maybe they are there to induce turbulence, like a golfball does.

My experience with it is that the round is not spinning one little tiny bit. I just made some rifled slugs for my 1.5" bore cannon and they had less velocity and less power on impact than the ones without grooves. Grooves were just 1/8" deep, but it lets way too much gas past. With a cardboard disk to seal it somewhat more speed but still no perceivable spin.

Shot straight up the slug still tumbles after it slows down...no different than a potato or a non rifled slug.

I still want to try some ways of stabilizing the slug... but rifling does not seem to matter.
