Hey New Zealand finally makes some Spudgun headlines!

I heard about this the other day, pretty funny really. I'm not a fan of their tactics but I support what they're doing. The bloody Japanese constantly disregard international law and hunt whales too close to Australia or New Zealand where they are not allowed to. Frankly, I wish it were them sleeping with the fishes, but the greenpeace bunch aren't the smartest either and can be pretty embarrassing.

The NZ Greenpeace have been using spudguns since the 90's I believe, mainly to launch objects on to whaling ships. They shoot stink bombs and rancid butter etc so the Japanese can't go on deck because of the smell, and they have to spend time washing their decks down.

Such a shame the boat was destroyed, it was a very cool boat and well known over here.

But the Japanese usually do have a hard time whaling with Greenpeace on their backs, which I think is good because the Japanese are scum when it comes to whaling. They just never obey the international laws and regulations and seem to have a lot of 'mistakes' in what they catch, where they catch it and how much they catch.

On the goofy "pirates" side ... that whaler sure as hell isn't a "Research" vessel. Printing the word in big ass letter on the side doesn't change the fact that the ship is a whale harvester.

You can argue the morality of whale hunting but I think the fact the Japanese try to hide it by calling the ship a "research vessel" pretty much proves that even the Japanese don't think it is such a good idea, or at least they recognize that they are breaking international agreements.

It is very cynical of them, no doubt, but throwing hippies at the problem isn't going to solve much.

They would better find a way to make the whales avoid the ship with maybe some short range high frequencys loudspeakers while following the "research" boat ... They would never get in range with any whale.

In other words.... I support what they're TRYING to do (stop whaling), but their methods are pure pussification. You want to go up against a whaling vessel AND have my sympathy? Then arm yourself. Be prepared to sink a friggin' whaler. Do that and I'll gladly put some money into your defense fund. Anything less is, IMHO, just people begging to be introduced to Darwin. It's just a damned shame that the whalers don't harpoon a Greenpeace boat!

Yes, but you can kill a bear if it attacks you. Unfortunately, you cannot sink and kill a bunch of Japs on a boat if they ram you. Nor is greenpace about to start being armed with automatic rifles and RPG's.

If they start killing each other, soon we'll have a war on our hands, pretty simple. There are other ways to prevent whaling than kill the whalers and there are ways to prevent the greenpeace than ram their boats and shoot them down.

It's all about non-lethal prevention that isn't a catalyst for a war, pretty much. This isn't exactly Somalia with the pirate situation. It's very hard to prove when whalers breech the regulations and its very hard to do anything about it because it all comes down to politics. And remember, it's only whales. No need to be killing people over hunting whales.

Lethal force is just obviously the worst possible apporach to this situation.

Give greenpeace a rest. They at least are trying to stop the pointless murder of whales for the sake of "tradition" which started in mainland Japan in World War two because they ran out of food. I know the coastal regions of Japan hunted whales but that is no excuse. I know some will disagree but they are doing something. I'm sorry if some are offended but come on.

All I have to say is that japan is all coastal region. I mean everything is within ~75 miles of the ocean.

That said, this thing was just a stunt to draw attention to the problem. What can I say, that's how the civil rights movement worked. And it worked.

But I have to say that I hate how some organizations will just say "please stop" to someone who won't stop unless someone makes them. It's the pirate issue all over again. "please don't take me hostage." as opposed to "Seriously, I've given you enough warning. Stop or I'll pop your dome!"

they could have bombarded the whalers ship with something more 'substantial' but they didn't as it's against the law

right now they are probably really pissed off and they might use something more 'effective' in the future...

I do agree that Greenpeace and the hippies on this boat were reckless and should not be challenging a huge whaler, but I do support their cause. Whales should not be killed just for "tradition".

I would however, build them a better spudgun if given a large sum of money.

Unfortunately it's all politics. Everyone knows that Japan breaks the law some of the time with where the catch whales, which whales they kill, for what purpose and how many of them but no one will stand up to Japan over such an 'insignificant' problem.

I think we all need to remind ourselves we are dangerously close to having this topic locked. I for one see it going that way unless we change our discussion focus to the actual 'spud guns' they use.
