Im no medical student but, it looks pretty real to me. tools can be nasty beings.

Mmm, reminds me of that picture where a guy had taken a hollowpoint to the head...

As graphic and disturbing as these pictures are (and fake or not), I don't think they're nessiccarily a bad thing... somthing as shocking as this will certainly stay in the back of your mind next time you use a lathe, and that can only be a good thing.

What do you expect? Lathes are very powerful (looks very large as well) and any power tool should be treated with respect.

I've seen someone hit a 20mm or so endmill with the back of their hand at ~5000+ rpm and the result wasn't pretty (albeit on a much smaller scale). He was fine and regained (most) of the control of his hand.

It's quite possible to pick someone up using their shirt as a handhold. Fabric does not tear easily unless there's somewhere for the tear to start.

Basically, clothes are normally stronger than the humans that wear them, which means they can very easily pull their owners about.

About 30 years ago, a very expert machinist with many years of experience was using a snow blower that got clogged up and forgot about safety.

A second later, he picked up the four amputated fingers, packed them in snow, and rushed to the hospital.


Lucky for him, there was a hand surgeon who sewed him back together.


Believe it or not, 6 months later, his hand worked fine and he was back to machining.

1. Be aware every second.

2. Keep your body away from rotating machines.

3. Never wear a tie near them.

Adding to you last point boyntonstu; never wear any loose clothing, gloves or similar near power tools.

ok that is pretty nasty stuff there. it is true that if people advises other not to look that curiosity eventually gets the better of one (most of the times).

You don't seem that put off so I suggest you take a better look at those pictures.

I'm seeing a bloke dragged under a large lathe chuck apparently by his clothing which caught on the spinning workpiece and pulled him in.

After that he would have been unlikely to be able to stop the machine so the still spinning chuck which is clearly on a powerful lathe was pulled down through his head and halfway down through the left side of his torso - removing his left arm on the way - like a grinding wheel. Presumably at that point it had torn far enough through his clothing to stop pulling his body further in.

So, no, I don't think a high powered rifle could have done any worse.

... high-powered rifle would make a clean hole, it wouldn't tear you apart, worst you could do would be a slow hollow-point .50 caliber, even that's not so messy.

Ive seen to much of this stuff for it to phase me. I wish rifles made a clean hole, the only kind of bullet that will make a clean hole is a wadcutter handgun round. Even full metal jacket will make a mess if anything organic is hit by it. Its awful what happened to him but I'm just saying when a hole that size is missing from somethings middle there is less blood than that, unless the hole just grazes the heart or liver.
