The reason a syringe is so hard to push is becuase the rubber pushes out on the cylinder to make a perfect seal.

I had used a syringe in this project but took out the rubber seal because of the friction, and cast my own head out of cottonwool and white glue (hadn't discovered epoxy yet )

You know Jack, the crossbow type isn't that bad an idea. Kast night I got the briliant idea to use an old handpump I have, the check valve is pretty much broken in it and I don't need it, it has a floating o-ring and a perfectly long handle so the crossbow layout won't be that hard to do. It also has a big volume so it should be pretty powerful... the thing that will be hardest is the trigger though. Your design is a little too complex for me, I think I can think of a simpler one.

a larger volume cylinder will not make it more powerful unless you have an extremely large spring/drawback energy to compensate. you have to model the size of the piston/cylinder based on the drawback strength of your spring. ^ I hope that makes sense

On another note, you could also use a small air cylinder, they're pretty cheap off of ebay.

Also, look at JoergS' slingshot crossbow thing, it has a great cocking and firing system

Also I saw his slingshot crossbow, the ammo holding mech was ingenious but it is a little beyond my capabilities with my tools and materials, maybe I'll study it some more and simplify it a bit to suit my needs...

Spring guns are not the easiest thing to make, I tried a the sryinge idea long before i found spudfiles but the problem with that is you cant put the spring inside it has to mount on the outside and it getts bulky quick. I know this wont be a popular suggestion but the easiest way to make a airsoft spring gun is take a nerf gun, open it up and cut out the little rod the nerf dart sits on. Wrap tape around a 6 mm tube until it fits snuggly in the guns barrel. One version of this using a arrow for the barrel and a nerf nightfinder got 280 FPS. You could add a simble T mag on it and have multi shot easily.

ah also if you stretch the spring or add in a new one or elastic mod it you will get a hell of a lot more fps

Here is a simple "springer" type gun The trigger system is "iffy" but it is simple and works. The drawback could also be an issue, but you'll figure it out

I have to scrounge around a few yard sales for that sort of stuff, maybe I'll get lucky...

i love it. i have the perfect trigger system for that. a bolt off of a door (its really heavt duty) that is operated by a trigger!!!! i could make this to shoot paintballs

That's a pretty good idea but it would cost a lot of money just for the trigger mech unless you use an old one...

i salvaged 2 of them from 2 old cedar doors that had a free sign on them from the side of the road (i left the doors)

Haha I was trying to think of another acronym for it that still said ASS haha but I figured nobody would rat me out cause it ain't for the showcase or anything yet.
