Sounds counter intuitive but when you make parts with a CNC machine, you simply load the material and "walk away". When you make stuff with tubing, epoxy, threaded joints, welding, soldering, etc, this all entails human labor. (more leak paths too)
Anymore, labor is the most expensive component of producing anything. Hence a lot of mass produced CNC parts like R/C car parts etc are really nice but pretty cheap. There is some effort in programming but once the program is proven, we simply bang out copies. You're right, still pretty cool what we can make.

I'm not used to thinking in terms of CNC so my "this is how I would have made it" opinion is irrelevant in this case, because as Pete mentioned, once the machine is set and manufacturing away, the complexity factor is rendered moot.

imagine the clatter of those 3 inch shells! (can't really call them "cartridges" lol) though I think there are other configurations which Mike has in mind that are more practical for the task at hand.

That would of course be very impressive. But I'd say that once you carry a few 3" mortar rounds on the cannon, not to mention a bolt solid, wide and long enough to chamber and eject them, as well as the rest of the gun and mechanism...
It would weigh a metric shit-ton.
Impressive though.

It sounds like there's quite a long "lock time" between the trigger pull and firing. Is the lengthy hiss before the muzzle blast actually a delay in firing, or is the sound out of sync on the video?

I think the noise your referring to is the pilot volume venting. We tend "squeeze" the trigger allowing it to "surprise" us with the shot so it may be the perceived delay. The piston is 2" and retracts only 3/8" so there is minimal pilot volume (1.17 cubic inches volume). When pressurized the piston differential is nearly 10 to 1 (.3 vs 3.14 inches surface area) so with both side equally pressurized, nearly the entire pilot needs venting before piston retracts.

Not yet. What we've done so far with both NITRON and VARGAS may get us some funding... so we are working on proposals. Less play time, more paperwork.

Hopefully they'll pay us a brazillian dollars!

... really? That gives a lock time of over 150 ms.
At best, that's an irritating inconvenience that'll affect accuracy (particularly on moving targets). At worst, it's giving your target a loud sixth of a second warning.
If it really has such a long lock time, I'd say that's a major problem.
