Yep it is bloody hot here, the humidity doesn't help either... if it wasn't so bad I would have removed the compressor from my A/C a long time ago

you know the one with the mag tube inline with the barrel and vents cut in it close to the detent... that should have enough mag capacity for 5 - 10 rounds...

I still prefer the dart idea for captive piston designs, it also means you push the piston back with the dart on reloading.

But the dart should have flights, so in order to centre the dart without damaging it, the toilet brush method JoergS used on is arrow slingshot could a good solution.

I don't really have any use (well I guess that applies to most people really) for such a launcher but I've been tempted for a while now to build a captive piston barrel for hunting arrows. (they just tend to be more rigid as they are designed for more powerful bows)

Not too sure what I'd do with it though, I guess I could try and make a shot straight through a hay bail. Hard targets often brake arrows or just make recovery very difficult.

Indeed, if we only made launchers that have a specific use this forum would be quite empty. In this case, the point of having a captive sabot is not for the sake of stealth and noise suppression (though it is a side benefit) but rather it preserves the sabot for re-use, as it involves enough work to manufacture for it to be tedious to use it only for one shot.

How well do the CO2 cartridges fly? tumble? I've seen others use them before, I think I might follow suit with my next build. They're uniform, destructive, disposable, and cheap (or free if you look hard enough). Seems almost too good to be true so me thinks there must be a catch; maybe a little lacking in the aerodynamic region? Maybe some little fins could be made and attached to them though. They'd look like wee little bombs 8)

They fly "straight" in the video because the target is only a couple of feet away from the muzzle, rather than using fins I think this is a better idea.



In the case of the barrel I'm currently using there's no need for a sleeve because it fits almost exactly. It's just a question of sawing the capsule in half and pouring something heavy into the nose. A good way for doing this if you don't have a container to melt lead in is to cut up some solder and heat the entire capsule, outdoors of course.

Here's one I made earlier, note the blunt nose from repeated impacts

edit: Here's an round made with the opposite side for "armour piercing" effect, due to very poor sectional density it didn't go all the way through but made a nice enough hole in the 1mm steel sheet. A saboted dart would have gone through several sheets like butter, and I still have yet to turn it up to 800 psi...

WIP shot, the suppressor is curing as we speak...

looks promising, how much power do you lose with that suppresor?

Haven't quantified it yet, basically there's three 8mm holes spaced 2 inches apart starting 2.75 inches from the muzzle, feeding into a dual chamber suppressor with a volume several times that of the barrel.

I'll test it tomorrow when it's all cured.
