Combustion definitally, loud that is even better espesially if you fire it unexpectedly.
I did something similar to this, i took my advanced combution to a boy scout meeting and showed it to everyone, i carried it in chared with nothing in the barrel and once everyone had arrrived i fired it and it scared everyone.

If you're just going for a crowd-pleaser, I would go with a combustion cannon. For performance, i would go with a pneumatic.

I am going for both crowd-pleasing and performance but more then the other. About 70% crowd / 30% performance so i want to make something that can do some damage, but for the most part sends chills down everyone's spine.
Sounds like everyone is on the same page with me making an advanced combustion. so unless there are any other objections that is going to be the lucky pig!

Maybe a 2X burst-disc hybrid?

Crowd pleaser = reliable, fast reload, loud noises.
I am in the exact same situation, and have decided to build a combustion as a crowd pleaser.

yes, you make very good points.
and i subcontiously felt the same way about combustions out-performing pneumatics (as a matter of choice) but didn't want to stir anything up so i kept it to myself
@paaiyan - I would love to but $150 budget kind of limits that possibility
