You can mitigate the strength issue with a strong sleeve.
One other technique I've used that helps reduce wear is to bind the mandrel tightly with wire, it adds a lot of metal contact area and adds strength.
Again I must stress that this is a last resort, where possible tubing should be purchased commercially.
