There is some truth in that, aluminium is slightly paramagnetic, I don't recall the unit which is used for magnetism (I know, I should know, but it's the evening), anyway the figure is 1.008. So if aluminium is paramagnetic, then austenite should be, though minutely so.

So if the magnet is big enough, then it will work. But I dont think you fancy installing a MRI machine in the breech of the launcher.

yes i would liked to use a regular magnet not a 2000 000 volt coil :) !!! :P

A magnet is a cheap and easy way to test the quality of an unknown "steel". If a magnet stick likes crazy the steel is fairly low grade and probably not homogeneous. A high quality steel won't hardly be attracted by a magnet at all. A shiny part that is strongly attracted to a magnet is probably an iron core (or a low grade steel) covered with chrome plating.

But, even high grade steels are attracted somewhat to a magnet. Strong enough magnet will usually hold on to it. Are you using crappy soft "refrigerator" magnets or decent rare earth magnets? Crappy magnets barely stick to raw iron let alone a decent steel.

What I did for a pvc paintball gun was used an O ring that the paintball could sit in, but could be pushed through with small force. I put the O ring in a coupler, at the retaining ring to keep the pipe from sliding in. Then, I slid the barrel in which held the O ring between the pipe and coupler ring which allows the paintballs behind the O ring to not roll out of the barrel but easily push through with the air pressure.

I have used these magnets:

To hold this ammo:

The hard part is distancing the magnet so that it holds the bearing with enough strength to prevent it falling out, but doesnt hold it too strongly in its field as to impair its leaving velocity.

I thought we have already established magnets wont stick to his barrel?

And yet people still use them.

Again...

FuĀcking magnets, how do they work?

Yeah, but there is some of those balls wich are simple steel and other wich are stainless steel !
I screwed up when i bought stainless balls :)

If the projectile is a reasonable fit in the barrel, the delay between valve opening and projectile motion should actually boost velocity.

LOL, unless you are using 2 psi, it will boost velocity like jack said...
the magnet is holding the projectile very lightly and the magnet's pull only extends to maybe 2cm of you're barrel length.
