My hybrid didn't make it very far :D :D

Evan, go look at MrCrowleys piston hybrid. I think he said it gets a range of 3 kilometers (6 miles if I am not mistaken).

You've mistaken, for sure :D
5k = 3 miles... 6 miles is 10k :D

Thanks for correcting that. I saw a cannon on this site though that could shoot well over 6 miles. And it wasn't VERA, but that is a good example.

a howitzer shoots rounds pretty far :D :D :D :D

Warhead, may have been HyGaC20, I'm pretty sure that monster could shoot 6 miles with a long enough barrel and the right ammunition.

have a looks throughthis thread ;)

Don't underestimate the importance of the projectile in terms of sectional density and drag coefficient, they make a massive difference if range is what you want.
evanmcorleytv wrote:Are you two mental? The longest shot from ANY homemade cannon was pneumatic, but it was only 4800 feet, and it was in Punkin chunkin.
These pneumatics, while granted aren't exactly home-made, could range out to 15,000 feet.

Again, it's the projectile that makes the difference.
And Warhead 6 miles? NO! 6 miles is over 31,000 feet! WTF ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?
A high end hybrid with a saboted dart, why not ;)

Hybrids can generate the most pressure of any simple spudgun, so they have the capacity to obtain the furthest range.

Therefore, I believe that a hybrid can go the furthest. Not to mention hybrids' gas output is hot, so the speed of sound is higher, so it can go further again.

Not to say pneubmatics 1 can't have a decent range, just that hybrids should be able to go further.

1 Velocity3x, I'm not calling your launcher a pneubmatic, but I'd like to see what you'd produce if you put that effort into making a hybrid.

Valid points.

Pneumatics have their benefits, definitely - no mix numbers or ignition systems to fiddle with for example.

For sheer power though, hybrids win hands down. I used to be "anti-hybrid" too for a long time, but once I saw the difference in muzzle energy, it's hard to imagine building a single shot pneumatic now.

As to shooting further however, muzzle energy is not as relevant as projectile optimistation.

The models in this thread greatly emphasise the importance of sectional density and drag coefficient, suggesting great range can be observed even at relatively low subsonic velocities which pneumatics and even 1x combustions can achieve.

I'll take that as a compliment. Odd you should mention it. I'm always designing new, pneumatic guns. Always trying to creating something that will really get my attention, but in the end, I abandon my designs because I find them to be boring. Maybe I could find new inspiration in a hybrid endeavor. Still searching for the next / better design.

I'm still tweaking and massaging the idea. "Things" may begin in a couple of weeks.

A light gas gun can probably go the furthest, but it is probably the most illegal of all the cannons. So I would stick with hybrid or pneumatic.
