Tell them the volume control on their radio turns clockwise to get louder and clock wise is right and left is the other way or tell them to draw the letter L and then tell them the bottom part of the L is pointing right.

Why the hell would you need to explain left and right? If you really had to you could do so by the position of the planets in orbit at that moment.

But all you really need to do is direct them to make simple gloves, the same on both sides, top and bottom. Then all they need to do is make two of those. It wouldn't matter which one they picked up, it could fit on the left or the right hand.

All of the comments about clockwise have the same issue - their clocks/dials could go backwards relative to ours.

And they don't have to have any idea how to write our language to understand speech. There are enough illiterate people on the planet that can do that.

About looking at North America: They don't know which land mass is north america, and imagine they look at it upside down - Now they've got the wrong answer.

It's indenably a difficult question to answer. As a clue - You're all thinking too big...

Do you mean right as in correct or right as the direction?
Can't they just keep trying on their gloves until they fit? And how did you tell them how to make a glove without knowing how many fingers they have etc?

well, if they cant understand anything (what is what I'm getting from the above posts) how the heck would they understand the instructions you gave them to make the glove? :x

I could give instructions to make a pair of gloves without the requirement of right and left, using instead, "on one side" and "on the other".

You just get them to make one, and then tell them to make a mirror image.

However, you don't know which glove they made first.

The making of the glove is not the problem.

You guys are shitten me! The alein has built a freaking space craft and flew it within radio contact of earth and understud a earthleans instructins on how to make a pair of gloves! And the question is how to tell him witch glove is the right hand one? They don't need gloves, they where smart enough to build a heater!

Shouldnt they already have gloves?
Anyway jrrdw is right but thats not the point of this exersize, its to show how hard it is to explain left and right...not hard at all but everytime we get it right joanna says they dont know how to do that. :x
