yo be carefull with KNO3, depending on what you plan on using it for, it gives off alot of heat. some friends and i thought about using it to make smoke bombs for paintball in the woods but the sugar-KNO3 mixture gives off lots of heat similar to thermite, it will literally burn the hairs of your skin at like 10-15 feet away depending on amount used. Also take into acount its form, if you plan on making black powder, the more fine/powdery the crystals, the faster and better it will burn, therefore bing more powerful of an explosion

o yea, dont do anything on your stove, lol use the grill and hanve a fireextinguisher lol, the shits messy in multiple uses where melting it down is required, and its flammable

im using it to make rocket engines and smoke bombs, and ive used it alot its not like this is the first time ive ever messed with it, but when we were making stuff with it it came from a friends house.
and i already know all all about what its capable of so were smart and use every safety precaution possible when we mess with it, and i melt the mixture together using a hotplate on my porch and we always have a big box of baking soda with us in case it ignites

thats better then what my friend and i did when we made smoke bombs. we did it on his parents brand new stove and had a 4 pound batch and it sponatniosly combusted, it took us 3 hours to get the stove clean again and get rid of the smell.
And ive never reallt trusted ebay cause my friend got screwed on ebay, and ive always felt better about buying from an actual chemical/firework supply store. How much did you pay on ebay though?

Usually you can find it all over on eBay, try potassium nitrate, KNO3. Not sure why salt peter didn't work, oh well. Usually you can get 10 ls for $10 on eBay, 5 lbs for $5, etc.

As someone said, KNO3/saltpeter/potassium nitrate is easy to get. If you buy it at Walmart or someplace though as stump remover or fertilizer, it will be about 95% pure, or less if it's fertilizer. For a lot of things this is just fine. But if you want it more pure, you can recrystalize it.

KNO3/Sucrose smoke bombs are good, but you can make a much better smoke bomb far more easily. Simply purchase an instant cold pack from your local drug store, open it, and collect the ammonium nitrate prills. Dissolve these in water, then get some newspaper sheets and soak them in the solution for a few seconds until they are saturated. Dry the sheets, then roll them into a cylinder and tightly bind the ends with steel wire or tape. Then, simply light one end of the device, and it should begin to produce white smoke. ALOT of white smoke. Far more than any KNO3/Sucrose composition.
well if theres as much smoke as you say there is then ill definately try that, sounds like fun 8)

and if someone already mentioned this earlier in the thread then i just missed it

There are better uses for NH4NO3 than smoke devices. Like, say, nitrations.
Moth balls are napthalene or I believe the other kind is dichlorobenzene (it's been a while since I was looking at them).
Fertilizers may have KNO3 in them, but most in the city will have a mix of multiple things. If you want just KNO3, you will need to go to the country or a hydroponics store. At least that is the case in the US as far as I know. You can get NH4NO3 this way also, but you don't want to buy too much or draw any attention since this was one of the chemicals Timmothy McVeigh used for the UKC bombing. He was trying to make ANNM, but ran out of nitromethane, so he just used fuel oil instead to make ANFO.

Some may, but it will be expensive. Just buy it at Walmart or online.
Most anyone who works there will know exactly what you are buying it for if you look like a kid. And few will be willing to sell it to you because they don't want to be responsible for what you could do.
