what would you reccomend?

i recomend building one from scratch or at least from a frame that is ment to cary a engine mounting a big enough one on a bike would be very tricky

if you can weld make one if you cant find someone who can and design it all out with some where to put a good size lawn mower engine

with that design, when i run out of gas im screwed. thats why i chose a bike

would it be better to use the chain from the bike or the saw?

The chain from the saw has teeth on it If that caught your leg you would not be very happy.

The pluses off this project for me:

if it works i may be able to ride it.

i will learn soemthing new.

The minuses:

I'd be to afraid of chain sawing my head of to ride.

i was talking to my dad about it and he said it would be cool. he recommended a lawn mower engine. i would make a chain guard for it.duh

well you take the gov linkage off and then attach a cable to the throttle butterfly in the carb

Well first off I had the same idea but I never completed it because of lack of money and materials. But there is no reason why it wouldn't work. A chainsaw has plenty of torque to spin a bike tire and theres not really that much that you could mess up on that would put you in danger. You would probably need a welder to atleast weld a bracket for the chainsaw. But I would defenitly try and use the chain that the bike came with. All you really have to do is attach it add a centrifigul clutch and just put a throttle cable on. You could just use the front brake handle as the throttle handle since you wouldn't be using the front brake anyways. And I would not use a lawnmower engine because they are heavy and almost all of them are horizontal shaft engines.

I saw this thing on instructables about some people who used a pneumatic hand drill and an old propane tank filled with compressed air and they geared it up to a bike and it worked. I reckon if you had a better drill (maybe even a steam engine) and a larger tank (say a dive tank) you could make it have quite reasonable range. you can look it up on instructables for the full details.

I just thought that might interest some people because its kind of related.
