Oh no no no, the answer I expected was "You can always redo the part" - and to be honest, I will most likely do that before the build is over. First though, I've going to have a crack at the nose plug, I'm curious as to what working with aluminium will be like.

Part 3, which is just terrible because:

- the thread is not concentric

- the major diameter is far too small again, this time because I got carried away turning it down before cutting the thread

- the cap length is 14mm long instead of 15mm because yours truly didn't take the 1mm thickness of the parting tool into account

Also, as I imagined I like machining aluminium a bit less than I do brass.

You should cut the part so you have enough material for facing to the final dimension. You should really check those videos I sent you, JSR. Theres a lot of tips and tricks that will make your machining a lot easier. Not to mention step by step instructions and propper machining techniques

Don't feel bad, you'll need practice, one way or the other. I think you are doing quite well for a second day with the machine.

The next stage is completed... and this also complete all the pengun external pieces. I'm working on the video and I'll do a bit of polishing. I had again some remarks that the polishing could be better And I though I was picky!

I should post it hopefully for tomorrow, late evening.

This was deliberate, personally it's a better way to further my "education", if at the cost of "proper" materials.

edit: been thinking about how to get a concentric thread, came up with the following ptential solution which I hope to try later today. I figure if I make the rod 5mm or so longer than the final length, and turn this down to just over the minimum diameter of the thread (say 9.9mm or so in this case) this will give the die enough space to easily bite into the rod while in the lathe, allowing me to accurately finish off on the vice. The extra thread portion is then removed once the thread is complete.
