The motor is from a vacuum. Brand: Hoover. Not sure about the model of the vacuum, couldn't find it, but the motor also says ACM12T.

Most dimmers are marked for resistive load only. Check the dimmer you are considering. The inductive load can destroy dimmers not designed for inductors. It has to do with the same inductive kick that makes ignition coils work. The dimmer won't like it.

I don't want to buy a lathe, I don't want to make a hybrid... what, are you playing life in "hard mode"?

I don't know if it has been mentioned already as this thread is a bit of a bear to read through - but a common motor replacement in mini-lathes for speed control is to just take a motor out of a working treadmill and use it's speed control.
They are relatively easy to find used on Craigslist for VERY cheap, and sometimes free. IF you dont have a craigslist for your area, find some other online classifieds list

No scrapyards near me.
I will build a lathe. If it's the last thing I do. You all shall see!

Just buy that chuck that I showed you! That way you won't have to worry about it blowing up in your face like the pvc chuck did... I still can't believe that you decided to use pvc over metal. Especially for something that would be spinning really fast...

Because I didn't have any metal!
I will not buy a chuck! I am one of the most determined people you'll ever meet. I WILL build one!! One that will not blow up!!

Mr.Tallahassee, I need to go to a scrapyard posthaste.
GF, I've got some information on homemade lathes, mind if I email it to the email on your profile? I think you'll find it useful. Otherwise PM me with an email that is suitable.
