i got my chrony and did some testing.
the hybrid at a 5x was at 1075 FPS and my pneumatic at 690.

@DYI: Well, that's quite an impressive day. Sounds like my resume (but why I'd put that on my resume, I can't think.)

I haven't done much - well, any - building or shooting lately, in spite of being away from the university. The local weather has been classified as a disagreeable jerk.

So, that means more thinking!!!

In the world of spuds today I went airsofting and brought the KAMG along with its new triggered burst disk setup.
lots of people throw away random junk on this large pile of junk. there were things like sheet metal, old radios, a water heater, random car parts, old electronics, broken TV's and computors, and just random garbage. I must have fired over 100 shots that day as I used an entire roll of brown tape(my favorite burst disk material). By the end of the day everything kinda looked like swiss cheese, the water heater was vaporized and mangled metal littered the ground.
besides that I got my pvc mini coax to work and am happly firing bbs at everything.
and that is about it.

I just poured the casting of a new bolt for the latest installment of the auto-breech saga. As was rightly pointed out, since the bolt relies on momentum to open fully and return, bolt weight is an issue. The original bolt tipped the scales at a mere 2 grams, the new one should weigh at least four times that amount. I've also thrown a steel washer into the casting matrix to reinforce it in order to cope with the increased stresses.

Nothing left to do but cross appendages while the epoxy cures

In the world of spuds today...I've been working on my camera flash circuit for a little bit now and am almost ready to strap it on my old trusty advanced combustion. The weather here in EWA (Eastern Washington) is now in the mid 50's so spudding in upon us. I've got my new bolt action tennis ball barrel that I haven't gotten to test that I might actually take out today.

Jared, do you know that a 3" cap fits perfectly in 4" pipe?

In the world of spuds today, I did quite a bit of design work on the final version of the [redacted] project that's ongoing at the moment (and it will continue to be that way for several months, probably all summer).

Also, I was inspired by the "fire extinguisher flamethrower" thread to make my own. Not nearly as ghetto though, and I have so many parts lying around from failed and impractical projects that I only needed so spend $30 at the hardware store. The total cost of parts would have been well over $200 if I hadn't used nearly 90% recycled components. The fuel storage chamber is 150 ci of 4" steel pipe, a bit more with the hose and 2" nipple added, and the pressure source is my Type 16 Industrial nitrogen tank. Right now it's just a water gun, as I haven't got the go-ahead to use fuel (read: gasoline or methylated spirits) yet.

Planned upgrades include:
-proper fuel line hose, to allow use at 300+ psi
-better nozzle. Right now, the flow is forked up, and it sprays a bit, only shooting around 40 feet
-backpack size nitrogen tank, so that the whole thing is contained in the pack (which already weighs 25 pounds)
-new tank, the current one is part of the hybrid in my sig and weighs twice as much as it needs to because of the rather thick endcaps
-equalisation valve so that I'm not pouring fuel in through the same hole that the air is coming out of. The current setup is annoying, slow, and absurdly dangerous
-replacing tape with hose clamps to avoid the ghetto look
-replacing the 1" solid teflon rod that I'm using as a spacer. I'll be right pissed if it melts, and I can use something that's not as expensive or rare in its place
-probably a lot more that I can't think of right now...


I'll make a thread about it when it looks decent and I have some shooting videos.

Looks like it will be very nice when you finish DYI, what kind of range do you expect? The teflon will turn clear at about 300celcius before it starts to melt at around 320celcius (virgin ptfe)

"Today in the world of spuds" I started making a 4" (well just under) piston co-ax. The chamber is S/S,around 1.3litres and i plan on making it so i can have interchangable barrels, the biggest will be 34mm and the smallest 12.7mm.
The piston weighs 150grms and will have around 8mm travel.
It will be the biggest piston cannon i have made, should be done by the end of the week.

its cool but how could you use up 4" pipe like that, it could be a high pressure pneumatic that could archive supersonic, only use an fire extinguisher or a used tank or a pvc tank which is fairly safe
