I agree with Kenny, same reason I'm a fan of rabbit.

Actually I hate rabbits alot, nothing that cute and fuzzy, and lovable can actually be THAT lovable. it's not possible.

Killjoy and A-98.
Both of you sure are a freakin work of art.
Seeing both your homophobia and ignorance has led me to the conclusion that there is something else that bothers you. As to what that that makes you direct your anger towards these fragile topics I don't know.
Hollywood has run out of ideas?
that, I don't understand.
I never said i was a homophobe and i don't dislike gays, i got several good friends who are gay, its just a movie about it just seems weird. And by the way, my friends who are gay who saw it said they really disliked it and i saw it and would have to agree with them. And don't you dare get me started on ignorance. And if you haven't noticed, just about every movie thats been coming out follows the same theme, good prevails over evil with action and some poorly written love story put in. Brokeback mountain was hollywoods attempt at something new, and i applaud their attempt, but its just the theme was controversal and slightly weird in my personal opinion.
And you talk about an open mind but then you go and criticze how i felt about a movie, way to be a hyprocrite. You know sometimes you really irritate me frank.
Anyways, i always thought elk was pretty good and i have yet to try rabbit, think you guys could give me any good cooking suggestions for rabbit?

i agree with all of the above, except for the "sometimes you really agravate me" part....usually...but everyone agravates me occasionally.

also, venison is very good, less fat than cow

My grandad used to make venison jerkey which I could never get enough of, used to put a little soysauce and ginger on it, damn it was good.

Well I guess I had the wrong impression.

pimpmann22 wrote:Just wondering, but why are you vegetarian? For the animals sake, or what?
There are many reasons.

But primarily, I've grown up with it - I've learnt the morals of my parents, and they're vegetarian - so I am too. However, rather than just mindlessly following what they do, there are other reasons.

Usually, the conditions that the animals are kept in is sub-standard - and not eating meat is a form of boycott of that. Ok, it won't have any effect on the industry, but it makes me feel morally better.
As I don't have to eat meat to survive, I'm happier being vegetarian.

This next point is probably going to cause some friction.

Vegetarians live 2 years longer on average. This is a completely provable fact.
It's not because of it being a better diet, or anything - it's a matter of principles. Anyone with strong principles who feel they are acting for the best (regilious people included) tend to have a fractionally longer lifespan.*

*Excepting those regilious people who feel so strongly that they blow themselves up.

And there's the fact that vegetarianism tends to do less damage to the planet. You don't get many people worried about declining grain stocks in wherever - but you do hear about declining fish stocks and the rain forest being cut down for cattle space.

In addition, vegetarianism is more efficent in it's process of self-sustaining. Protein efficency is just one way of looking at this.

If a field of soya is 100 protein units - if you fed that to a cow (or other animal), then you'd only get back about 10 of those units from the cow. The further up the food chain you eat from, the less efficent it gets.

Finally, I do it to a certain extent because of a dislike of killing animals for food, but I have so many other reasons as well.

That was probably overly long, but I hope that explains it without sounding like I'm trying to recruit people into vegetarianism.

I have a lot of respect for your points, namely the sub-standard environment we raise most of our cattle in.
You also make an interesting point where you say
If a field of soya is 100 protein units - if you fed that to a cow (or other animal), then you'd only get back about 10 of those units from the cow. The further up the food chain you eat from, the less efficient it gets.
I had never thought of it that way.

As to killing animals for food - although they do it in some countries, we're not really talking about pets here - we're talking about animals that were farm-raised to be slaughtered and eaten. It's their life's purpose, and it's hardly considered curel or inhumane. Having said that, the industry does have some massive problems (lets look at recent mad cow and ecoli scares, to start with) that should definitely be addressed. Boycotting that industry would be very effective in bringing about change if we could get the whole population behind it - but that won't happen.

I wanted to ask you though - what about people that hunt their own food? In your opinion, is it morally any better or worse if someone spends a day or more tracking, following, killing, bleeding, dressing, skinning, and butchering their own meat? It certainly gives the animal a fair chance, and doesn't contribute to the f**ked-up meat industry. What do you think?

I have no problem with vegetarianism or the people who practice it - I just love BBQ'd ribs and steak far too much to give it up. Also, I figure humans have been eating meat for a few thousand years - our digestive systems are designed to be omnivores, though obviously (you're living proof) they can adapt to be herbivores.

All in good, clean, off-topic debate fun.

Peace,
Pete Zaria.

that was beautiful, both of you ....joannaardway, you have made a very good point that makes me think about vegitarianism in a different way. unfortunateley i could never give up meat, its almost all that i eat. ive had it 4 times in the last day.

but you did state your reasons very well, and i have made you a cookie for that Image

To me, it's a life purpose that has been chosen for them. Not quite "fair" if we're entirely honest.

It's morally better IMO, assuming the animal isn't caused extreme stress or pain.

And while we're on this point, I'll answer the other question I'm sometimes asked. If I was trapped in the jungle or wherever, and the only option to survive was to eat meat - I would do so. However, I would resume my normal eating habits as soon as it was possible.
I have no problem with vegetarianism or the people who practice it - I just love BBQ'd ribs and steak far too much to give it up. In evolution terms, a few thousand years isn't a lot. Before that omnivorous time, our evolutionary ancestors were herbivorous foragers. Our body systems are still well honed towards that.
So much so, that actually, it would be difficult for a human to survive healthly solely on meat (like say, a tiger or other big cat does)
Consider, although we receive advice of "5 fruit and veg portions a day", there is nothing that suggests we should eat "2 portions of meat a day".

And yes, this does prove to be good off-topic conversation.

I'm not out to try and force you to stop eating meat. That's your own opinion, and I'll respect that.
It's good to see that you're at least understanding my point of view better now.

I don't mind them thinking we're crazy - I knew that myself.

All my friends know I'm a crazy bitch, but they enjoy a few spuds every now and again.

YAY!!! There has finally been a discussion about vegitarianism without anyone getting mad or anyone trying to force somone to eat/not eat meat! That has to be the first time I've ever seen that topic raised online without any flaming!!

I eat meat and have no intention of stopping (steak tastes too good) but I have no problems with vegitarians.

Oh and to say somthing back on topic. I hate people who can't have a discussion like the one above and who don't respect other people's opinion.

Hmm,People trying to convince me there is an after life even though I have had my own experience and I see it different but they still try and cram it into me,and yes they are Christens but I'm not saying all Christens are like this but the ones that try and impose there own view on other people like that really piss me off.

People who try to force their beliefs of you beliefs religious or not.
(and for those of you who dont live near a Bible scholar Relion means worshiping God seriously.)
People who ignore you or wont ever believe you because you dont believe Darwins idea that he didnt even come up with.(The Ancient Greek where teaching it thousands of years before him.)

I know I will always be treated like I am ignorant because I wont believe evolution.
But I am not ignorant.
