hmm i had my hybrid in my hands when the hose for the propane split in half and sprayed ice cold propane all over. i had no valve on the propane adaptor so it sprayed in like 5mins before i got a pipe wrench and took the adapter off. the worst thing was that it was inside

I have to say that the same goes for me. The difference it that i don't post so much, so you wont notice it until you see it on the news.

My dumb ass forgot to put the back cap on it. It fired, but the flames went out the back, which just happened to be where my body was.
Same exact thing happened to me with one of my first basic combustions. Same EXACT! Left a pretty cool "Crop-Circle" looking burn pattern on my pants though....too bad the same thing was on my leg :violent3: = :cussing: lol. I take it yours was an advanced combustion? since mine was a spray n pray, there's no way it would have hurt as much as a combustion would have. I'll dig up the pair of pants and post a pic tomorrow.

Well yeah, but if one of your projects decided to have a catastrophic failure we'd probably feel the shockwave... And then see the special feature on BBC about it

Not much of a spud gun, but When I was making an electromagnetic coilgun, I forgot that I was using full metal tweezers to get out a wire.
Big mistake...
Also my friend had a spud gun, so for a first, we fired it off. he forgot the cement. Pop goes the end cap, hits 'im in the spleen, and he's down for like 30 seconds. It woulda been funny if I didn't get hit by the barrel though.

I've had one minor incident.
I was about to fire my first pneumatic when suddenly one side of the chamber falls off followed by a gallon of water.

Probably from those water balloons... A day later it was all fixed.

I was recently building a little mini while I was bored from a hair-gel container and a biro pen barrel. I was having serious problems getting it to ignite, when suddenly BOOM. It was the single loudest sound I have ever heard. The hair gel container (polypropylene I believe) did not shrapnelise, but (luckily) tore itself to sheds. I was holding it very close to my face, as i was expecting it to fire normally, and I have a slightly bloodshot eye, a small cut on my nose and a few small cuts on my hands.
60 hours later and my ear is still ringing and muffled.
Lesson learnt - be careful - even minis can be stupidly powerful!

I had a simple but very effective combustion that exploded in my hands
my aunt got hit hit by a piece of pvc and had no serious injury
but I think it's very impotant to know what not to do

When I was building my mini, I was doing some fuel-air mix tests with a syringe and some small plastic jars about the size of my chamber (1 Oz). As we all know, if one end is open, we get a little bit of flame and a "whoop" when the mixture ignites. So I thought I'd seal the open end with some packing tape - not real tight or wrapped around a bunch of times, but just so that the hole was sealed. Wow did it ever make a big bang! Sounded like a .22 going off. My wife opened the garage door and said "working on a spud gun?"
After reading most of these entries, here's a summary of some of the most common:
1. Looking into the barrel/chamber to see the spark while fuel still present
2. Loading while fueled/pressurized
3. Firing indoors
4. Ricochets
5. End caps blowing off
I'd say that about covers 80% of it! This should be the start of a "Don't do any of these things - EVER" list

people do put a spud in the front of the barrel and fuel it a tad to rich and press the spud down so they get a hybrid effect

I made my first combustion gun out of a 2-liter & some sched-40. I filled it with propane after loading a potato. It wouldn't ignite (I had a hole for fuel & sticking a grill lighter through). I laid it in my lap, barrel pointing at the plastic city trash can 2 feet away from me.
It was angled slightly up at the barrel, so here I am lighting my lighter near the lighter hole trying to get it to burn out the propane & suddenly *WHOOOOOSHBOOOM* The potato fired & hit the trash can, ricocheting back into my left temple. Everything went pure white, then pure black, I got dizzy & my ears rang for half an hour.
Luckily I didn't lose consciousness or get a concussion from it.
Just a pretty heavy head ache & a bruise on my temple.
Lesson? Even unsealed guns can fire when discharging the fuel with an open port.
