Would I also need to buy different epoxy for the carbon fibre? I already have some epoxy for the fibreglass.
I believe it's chemically the same thing (assuming you weren't going to use polyester resin) but they appear to differenciate between bonding and laminating resin in terms of viscosity, which makes sense, you want something for lamination to be more runny to get in all the weave.

Only if we can reserve some of the funds to buy you some epoxy so you won't hate/fear it as much ;)

Lol fair point - getting an aluminium or steel barrel might be cheaper than reinforcing PVC/ABS with cf and epoxy

Actually, I just may use some epoxy on my new design. It just won't be holding end caps on or anything.

About the barrel, can't we just find him the same barrel he has now, but just in METAL?!

As for an aluminium barrel:

50.5mm O.D. with 1.5mm walls for an I.D. of 47.5mm. It could work although i'm not sure if the walls are thick enough and I still have to find a way of threading it somehow. I've bought from him before and he will cut lengths for me. The longest length that can be posted is 1.5m.

I'm sure you could join two lengths neatly enough if needed. 3m barrel :)

You could also just find a way to get a seal on the barrel and then fasten it down by some other means.

Baby steps :)

As to reinforcing the barrel there is a simpler solution - strong tubing slightly bigger than the barrel sleeved over it, and simply pour epoxy in the gap.

Wrapping the barrel with wire first makes it stronger and helps to economise on epoxy.

Okay, we've exceeded my budget once again. Back to the fibreglass :wink:


edit: For application, I'm thinking of mixing the epoxy in a disposable cooking tray and using a paintbrush to paint the underside of the first 20cm of the fibreglass (which will be enough to complete a single wrap of the barrel), then applying more epoxy to the underside, 20cm at a time, and continuing to wrap the fibreglass as I go. After that it'll all be wrapped in plastic wrap.

Apart from gloves, a well ventilated room and a newspaper covered floor, any other precautions I should take?
