Just in case there was any doubt, I won't be firing AP rounds in my back yard anymore, at least not on that scale. And at my range, several miles of uninhabited wilderness should work quite well as a "backstop".

And for all who are interested, I took a picture of the hole punch.

i dont think I have any of those im gong to need to buy some hardened steel from mcmaster or harden some myself.
I am surprised that it was affected so little by the impact I know it is hardened steel but when you are dealing with those types of forces you would expect a little more flattening at the tip and bendage.

no it wasn't! if i have got it right it is hardened steel plate!
BTW i just realized that the plate i was shooting at was stainless.

You can however, realize that no firearm ammunition capable of doing this is available in my entire country.

I'm not acquainted with Canadian Firearms laws but...

30-06, 7mm(FMJ), .308(FMJ), .303(FMJ), .416... just to name a few calibers would all be able to replicate this performance... not to mention .50 caliber perhaps not the BMG but there are other .50 rounds that are used in Europe that may be legal in Canada.

If these calibers are illegal in Canada I'm sorry...

i have shot a .50 sniper at 1000 yards on the wall of a mountain. there are big chunks of the mountain falling in the river below:)
i also shot a tracer into the river and there was redglowing shrapnel going up in every direction. i think ALL .50 ammo would have done that easily.

None of the bar stock available at my hardware store could scratch it, meaning that it was harder than the bar stock. This probably means it was normalized, or tempered. I wouldn't be surprised at either one, but it definitely wasn't annealed.

None of those calibers would have made a hole 9/16" across, other than the .50, and no non-armor piercing rounds leave a perfectly clean hole like that.

Your right all .50's would however the .50 BMG round is not legal in europe. I do not know Canadian firearms laws but IF the .50 BMG round is illegal...which it is in California there is other .50 caliber rounds rounds that are just as good which would also do the job nicely. Alot of .50 rounds are steel core and are similar in characteristics to a AP round

Good job on the shot. What kind of hole punch is that? Do you mean a center punch or is there some other kind of tool you are referring to?

the tracer's i used was of hardened steel.

Well, I think we can allow hole punch - it's more descriptive...

I second Jared, definitely at least confine the end of the barrel and plate in tons of sandbags. A ricochet would be the epitome of bad...
